16-year-old arrested; deliberate capturing with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to participate in a mass faculty capturing that might have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive School, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division said in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no college that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing harmful system supplies and threatening to commit a criminal offense which is able to lead to dying or great bodily harm.

Police stated they acquired a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a shooting that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police did not say if the teenager was a scholar at Berkeley Excessive College.

Upon executing the search warrant, police stated they discovered parts to explosives and assault rifles, several knives, and digital items that might be used to create further weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teenager's arrest.

"Faculty security stays a excessive precedence for the division," police stated in a statement. 

Details on whom the teen was making an attempt to recruit were not disclosed. Police mentioned this case stays below investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens instructed the college's neighborhood that the district was in shut contact with police throughout this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teenager's weapon elements, the district relied on police experience to evaluate any potential ongoing risk to its faculties. The district communicated with police on the coed's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions throughout this era, we alerted our administrative and safety staff about this investigation and, as is our standard observe, maintained close contact with our BPD Faculty Resource Officer on the Berkeley Excessive School campus," Stephens wrote. "All through the investigation period, we were assured that this individual did not pose a direct threat to the Berkeley High Faculty community."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district could pursue disciplinary action against the student.
