Taliban chief orders girls to wear all-covering burqa in public: Decree

Afghanistan’s supreme chief and Taliban chief on Saturday ordered the nation’s girls to put on the all-covering burqa in public - one of many harshest controls imposed on women’s lives because the Taliban seized power.

“They need to put on a chadori (head-to-toe burqa) as it is conventional and respectful,” said a decree issued by Hibatullah Akhundzada that was released by Taliban authorities at a perform in Kabul.

“Those ladies who will not be too old or young must cowl their face, besides the eyes, as per sharia directives, in order to avoid provocation when meeting men who will not be mahram (grownup shut male family members),” the decree said.

It added that if ladies had no important work outdoors it was “higher they keep at house.”

Throughout their first regime between 1996 and 2001, the Taliban imposed related restrictions on girls.
