SACRAMENTO, Calif. >> A suspect on the run since a mass shooting left six people useless during an alleged gang dispute in California’s capital metropolis last month has been arrested in Las Vegas, authorities said.
Investigators consider Mtula Payton was one of many alleged gang members who opened hearth in downtown Sacramento on April 3. He was taken into custody at an apartment complex, the Sacramento Police Division said in an announcement Saturday night.
“Las Vegas Metro Police Department worked with our detectives for weeks in an effort to find Payton,” the statement mentioned.
It wasn’t known Sunday if Payton has an attorney who may communicate on his behalf.
Payton and two others, brothers Smiley Martin and Dandrae Martin, had been charged this month with homicide in the slayings, in addition to weapons offenses.
Investigators provided no motive but mentioned in court paperwork that Smiley Martin and his companions recorded an internet video hours earlier than the taking pictures, flashing weapons and speaking trash from a location in rival gang territory. In it, they state their plans to move to the downtown area with the intent of opening fire.
Three men alleged to be gang members and three women who were innocent bystanders died within the shootout that occurred as patrons of bars and nightclubs emptied out onto downtown streets. A dozen extra folks had been wounded.
The Martin brothers, who had been among the many wounded, stay jailed. Attorneys for the brothers have yet to touch upon their charging.
Payton, who police say is a member of a rival gang, was being held in a Nevada jail pending transport back to California.
