Apple has discontinued the iPod, 20 years after it was launched.

The US tech giant stated its iconic music player has been replaced by other units, making the iPod redundant.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide advertising and marketing, said: "At the moment, the spirit of iPod lives on.

"We have built-in an incredible music expertise across all of our merchandise, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and across Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

"And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound high quality with help for spatial audio - there is not any better method to enjoy, discover, and experience music."

In October 2001, Steve Jobs debuted the original iPod and it was the primary MP3 player that might maintain 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

"With iPod, Apple has invented a complete new category of digital music player that permits you to put your complete music assortment in your pocket and hearken to it wherever you go," he stated at the time.

"With iPod, listening to music won't ever be the same again."

Comparable MP3 players launched by Microsoft and Sony didn't have the identical success because the iPod.

Apple has launched 5 versions of its music player - the Basic, Contact, Shuffle, Mini and Nano.

The company has been slowly killing its iPod range in recent times, with mobile phone technology enabling customers to listen to music companies on their telephones.

In 2014, the traditional click on wheel mannequin was discontinued, and the Shuffle and Nano were killed off three years later.
