Apple has discontinued the iPod, 20 years after it was launched.

The US tech giant said its iconic music player has been changed by other devices, making the iPod redundant.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide marketing, said: "As we speak, the spirit of iPod lives on.

"We have integrated an incredible music expertise across all of our merchandise, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and throughout Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

"And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound quality with assist for spatial audio - there's no higher technique to enjoy, uncover, and experience music."

In October 2001, Steve Jobs debuted the unique iPod and it was the first MP3 player that would maintain 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

"With iPod, Apple has invented an entire new category of digital music player that allows you to put your total music collection in your pocket and hearken to it wherever you go," he stated on the time.

"With iPod, listening to music won't ever be the identical once more."

Related MP3 players released by Microsoft and Sony didn't have the same success as the iPod.

Apple has released five variations of its music participant - the Classic, Contact, Shuffle, Mini and Nano.

The company has been slowly killing its iPod vary in recent years, with cell phone technology enabling customers to listen to music services on their phones.

In 2014, the classic click wheel mannequin was discontinued, and the Shuffle and Nano have been killed off three years later.

The seventh-generation iPod contact was the one mannequin nonetheless on sale at present.
